TLDR

Your past doesn’t define you—Jesus does. When He said, “It is finished,” He made a way for you to live free, forgiven, and filled with purpose. Your identity in Christ isn’t something you earn; it’s a gift you receive by faith. You’re not trying to become righteous—you’ve been made righteous through the blood of Jesus. If you’ve been wondering, “What is my identity in Christ?”—look no further than the Cross. God sees you as His child. And when you believe that, everything changes. This is your moment to walk boldly as a new creation, rooted in love, and full of the Holy Spirit.

IT IS FINISHED. OUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST IS SET.

Jesus didn’t come to improve your life. He came to transform it.

When He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30, NKJV), He wasn’t just talking about His suffering. He was talking about the complete, total, finished work of redemption. That means: your sin? Paid for. Your shame? Removed. Your past? Forgiven. That moment redefined everything—including your identity in Christ.

So many believers today are asking, “What is my identity in Christ?” and they’re living as if that question hasn’t been answered. But I’m telling you, it was answered at the Cross. The blood of Jesus didn’t just cover your sin—it cleansed you from it (1 John 1:9)You’ve been made brand new. The old you is gone. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV).

When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, you become a child of God. You are adopted into the family of God. You become a son, a daughter. You discover your true identity in Christ. This isn’t just a nice thought. It’s the truth. And when you see it—when you believe it—it’ll change everything about how you live, think, pray, and love.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Romans 8:14-17).

YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST IS FREELY GIVEN & FREELY RECEIVED.

A lot of us are still trying to earn something Jesus already paid for. That’s why we’re stuck in cycles of guilt and striving. We feel distant from God and wonder why we don’t feel close—but the issue isn’t distance; it’s disbelief. We haven’t fully believed that what Jesus did is enough.

Listen: You can’t do enough to become holy. You become holy by faith in the finished work of Christ. That’s my identity in Christ. That’s the starting line of the gospel.

God “… made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV). This isn’t about achieving. It’s about receiving. You’ve been made righteous by the blood of Jesus. That’s who you are now.

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST.

The Kingdom of God isn’t about performance. It’s “… righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17, NKJV). And righteousness isn’t something you earn—it’s something you receive when you’re born again. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6, NKJV).

If you don’t know who you are, you’ll be driven by insecurity. You’ll try to prove yourself through miracles, ministry, success—or whatever else gives you a moment of affirmation. But our identity in Christ is never found in what we do. It’s found in who He is, and what He did.

When you believe this, your worship becomes real. Your prayer life comes A L I V E. Your witness becomes bold. You no longer pray from desperation—you pray from identity. You no longer wonder if God will show up—you know He’s already inside of you.

HEAVEN PAID A HIGH PRICE FOR YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST.

People say, “I’m just not worth it.” But the Cross screams the opposite. The price God paid determines your value. And that price was the blood of His only Son.

Romans 8:38–39 (NKJV) says, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” But did you notice? It never mentions your past. Why? Because your past was washed away the moment you were born again. God says, “… Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” (Hebrews 10:17, NKJV).

That’s the power of your identity in Christ. You are not what you’ve done. You are not what was done to you. You are who the Father says you are. And He says you’re loved, forgiven, chosen, righteous, and free.

FINDING YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST IS NOT A JOURNEY, IT’S ABOUT REVELATION.

Romans 12:2 (NKJV) says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind …” You’ve got to stop thinking like the old you. You’ve got to start renewing your mind with the Word of God so you can live like the new creation you really are.

Sometimes people say, “Todd, I’m just trying to find my identity in Christ.” And I get that. But let me tell you something—when you stop looking to the world, and you start looking to the Word, you’ll realize your identity isn’t hidden. It’s right there in Jesus. Finding my identity in Christ isn’t about a journey—it’s about revelation. It’s when your heart and your mind finally agree with Heaven.

YOU HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST. YOUR IDENTITY FLOWS FROM HERE.

Philippians 2:5 (NKJV) says, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” You’ve been given access to the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). That means we can think like Jesus, love like Jesus, live like Jesusbecause His Spirit lives in us. That’s not pride. That’s promise. That’s your inheritance. That’s what happens when you realize, “This is my identity in Christ!”

When I wake up in the morning, I don’t wonder if God loves me. I don’t wonder if He’s for me. I know I’m accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6). I know I’m filled with the Holy Spirit. I know I’m forgiven and free. You’ve got to get that confidence in you—not because of what you’ve done, but because of what He did.

LIVE FROM IDENTITY, NOT FOR IT.

If you’ve been wrestling with doubt, fear, condemnation, or shame, it’s time to let the truth set you free. The Holy Spirit is in you. Jesus is interceding for you. And the Father has called you His own.

So stop asking God to give you something He already gave. You’re not trying to become a son or daughteryou already are. You’re not trying to get acceptedyou already are. You’re not trying to clean yourself upyou’ve already been made clean by the blood of Jesus.

Your identity in Christ is secure. You are a N E W C R E A T I O N. You are free from your past. You are filled with power. And you are called to walk in love and live by faith.

Let that truth burn in your heart today. And every time the enemy tries to whisper, “You’re not enough,” shout back, “It is finished!”

Amen.
